The NCC plans to extend its Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System, already used with the central bank, to other sectors that identify customers by phone number.
The Nigerian Communications Commission plans to widen use of its Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS), a tool that lets authorised organisations check whether a phone number has been recycled, swapped or flagged for fraud. Phone numbers that are deactivated and reassigned can give a new holder access to the previous owner’s bank and other accounts. “Building on our collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria, we intend to extend its use across sectors where phone numbers are used to identify customers and carry out transactions,” NCC executive vice chairman Aminu Maida said on Tuesday at the commission’s 95th Telecom Consumer Parliament. He did not name the sectors or give a timeline.
