The Ministry of National Defense says the Pangyo center, run with Ajou University, is the first of five planned regional defense AI hubs.

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense opened its first AI transformation hub in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, on Monday, Korea JoongAng Daily reports. The center, run with Ajou University, will collect physical AI data and train humanoid and multi-legged robots for tasks such as moving supplies into hazardous areas, explosive ordnance disposal and mine clearance. It is the first of five planned hubs. A ministry plan published on the government’s policy briefing site lists the others as a Joint Chiefs of Staff site in Yongsan with Korea University for joint command and control, an Army site in Daejeon with KAIST focused on agentic AI, a Navy and Marine Corps site in Busan with UNIST for maritime needs such as logistics support, and an Air Force site in Yangjae with Seoul National University for work including automatic target identification and aircraft fault analysis.
