Attorneys general in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana filed separate suits in state courts on 14 Oct. OpenAI says it has built age-specific protections.
Eight states filed lawsuits against OpenAI on Wednesday, each in its own state court, according to a release from Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird. The suits allege that ChatGPT is unsafe for children and that OpenAI misled parents about it. Arizona’s complaint, filed in Maricopa County Superior Court under the state’s Consumer Fraud Act, alleges that OpenAI misrepresented ChatGPT’s safety for minors. OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told CNBC the company has built age-specific protections and is working with states on industry-wide policy. Florida sued OpenAI separately in June.
