Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin told Bloomberg the change is planned under Taiwan-US reciprocal trade commitments. No list of covered products or effective date has been published.
Taiwan plans to tighten controls on advanced AI chips and servers destined for China, Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin said in a 12 October interview with Bloomberg News, published Friday. Kung said Taiwan would add advanced semiconductors and AI servers to its export-control list; once in force, unauthorized shipments of restricted equipment could face criminal charges under the Foreign Trade Act. He tied the changes to commitments under the Taiwan-US Agreement on Reciprocal Trade and did not give an effective date. CNA reports that Taiwan does not currently treat unauthorized AI chip exports to China as a crime, so suspected smugglers can only be charged under other existing laws. Reports so far trace to a single Bloomberg interview with Kung, and Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has not yet published a list or rule text. CTN will update when it does.
