Payments company EBANX says it is the first global processor to go live with OPay Direct Debit, letting streaming and software firms bill OPay wallets on a recurring basis without cards.
Brazil-founded payments company EBANX said on Thursday it has gone live with OPay Direct Debit, a recurring-payment option inside the wallet of Nigerian fintech OPay. International subscription businesses using EBANX can now offer OPay at checkout; customers give a one-time authorisation in the OPay app, after which merchants can collect later charges without the customer re-entering payment details. The companies pitch it as an alternative to the card-on-file model most subscriptions rely on, which matters in a market where, citing World Bank data, EBANX says only 5% of adults own a credit card. The companies say OPay has 40 million monthly active users. “This will give Nigerians an easy, fast and convenient way to pay for the global digital services they love,” said OPay chief commercial officer Elizabeth Wang.
